Training Description
This training will help participants understand basic skills system-involved youth (SIY) need to succeed in life. They will learn how to build health and wellness skills, interpersonal effectiveness skills as well as financial, educational and daily living skills. They will receive worksheets and information which can then be shared with SIY and their families to support improvements in their overall outcomes.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
· Identify 3 types of health and wellness skills which could be taught to system-involved youth (SIY) to support improved outcomes;
· Identify 3 interpersonal skills which would be beneficial for SIY; and
· Identify 3 key components to SIY education and career development success.
Agenda
9:00 – 9:30am Introduction: Participants introduce themselves and share what they would like to get from training. Brief explanation as to how System-Involved Youth benefit from targeted life skills education to help them successfully transition into adulthood and avoid further system-involvement.
9:30 – 10:30am Health and Wellness Skills
· Physical Health:
o Importance of regular exercise
o Nutrition education
o Accessing healthcare services.
· Mental Health:
o Coping mechanisms
o stress management techniques
o Access to mental health resources.
· Substance Abuse Prevention:
o Education on the effects of drugs and alcohol
o Resources for substance abuse treatment.
10:30 – 11:30am Interpersonal Skills
· Communication Skills: Effective verbal and non-verbal communication, active listening, and conflict resolution
· Relationship Building: Building healthy relationships, understanding boundaries, and recognizing toxic behaviors
· Social Skills: Manners, empathy, teamwork, and cooperation
· Personal Development: Self-Reflection, encouraging self-awareness, self-esteem, and personal goal setting.
· Decision Making: Critical thinking, problem-solving, and evaluating consequences.
· Resilience Building: Strategies to overcome setbacks, building a support network, and fostering a positive mindset.
11:30am – 12:00pm Daily Living Skills
· Household Management: Cooking, cleaning, laundry, and basic home maintenance
· Time Management: Prioritizing tasks, setting goals, and creating schedules.
12:00 – 12:30pm Lunch Break (CE hours will not be offered for this time)
12:30 – 1:00pm Civic Engagement and Community Involvement
· Community Resources:
o Knowledge of local resources like libraries
o Community centers
o Social services
1:00 – 1:30pm Financial Literacy
· Basic Financial Management: Budgeting, saving, understanding credit, and managing debt.
· Banking Skills: How to open and manage a bank account, understanding loans and interest rates.
· Consumer Awareness: Identifying financial scams, understanding contracts, and smart shopping habits
1:30 – 1:45pm Break (CE hours will not be offered for this time)
1:45 – 2:30pm Education and Career Development
· Academic Support: Tutoring, study skills workshops, and GED or high school diploma attainment.
· Career Exploration: Exposure to different career paths, job shadowing, and internships.
· Job Readiness: Resume writing, job application processes, interview skills, and workplace etiquette. Vocational Training: Skill-specific training programs, apprenticeships, and certifications.

Meet Our Trainer
Brooke Hailey, PhD is a licensed marriage and family therapist. She completed her undergraduate work at New York University and then received her masters from Antioch University and her PhD from Pacifica Graduate Institute. She has been in private practice in Los Angeles for more than twenty years. She is also the owner and clinical director of New Directions, an intensive outpatient program for eating disorders. Brooke works with adults, adolescents, couples and families. Though she specializes in the treatment of eating disorders, Brooke works with clients who have a variety of issues from depression, anxiety and addiction to relationship issues.
This course meets the qualifications for (5.25) BBS CE hours for LCSWs, LMFTs, LPCCs, and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences & is provided by Fred Finch Youth Center, CAMFT Provider #045295.
